As a website designer, one of the most exciting tools I work with is the Wix CMS (Content Management System). With Wix's CMS, the process of managing and updating content becomes easier and less time-consuming, even for beginners. Whether you’re a small business owner looking to take control of your website or a budding web designer, Wix’s CMS can be your key to building dynamic, organized, and impactful websites.

In this post, I’ll cover the basics of what a CMS is in Wix, how it works, and why certain industries can particularly benefit from it—think real estate agents showcasing their properties, travel agencies offering various destination packages, and chefs sharing recipes. By the end of this guide, you’ll have a solid understanding of how to use Wix’s CMS to create dynamic, engaging websites that meet the needs of both business owners and their audiences.

What is a CMS, and Why is It Important in Wix?

A CMS (Content Management System) is a tool that allows users to create, manage, and update content on their websites without needing in-depth coding knowledge. Traditional CMS platforms like WordPress and Joomla have been around for a while, but Wix brings something unique to the table. With its user-friendly interface and drag-and-drop features, Wix makes it incredibly easy for anyone to set up and manage content-rich websites.

Wix CMS revolves around two key features: Collections and Dynamic Pages.

  • Collections act as databases that organize content into manageable “buckets” of information.

  • Dynamic Pages are automatically generated pages that pull information from these collections, allowing you to display content in a consistent layout without manually creating each page.

These tools allow users to build websites that are both powerful and easy to update, making them ideal for industries where information changes regularly, such as real estate, travel, and the culinary arts.

Understanding CMS in Wix: Collections and Dynamic Pages

To get started with Wix CMS, you first need to understand its two core components: Collections and Dynamic Pages.

What Are CMS Collections in Wix?

A Collection in Wix is essentially a table or a database that holds your content. Think of it as a spreadsheet with different columns representing different fields (like title, description, price, image, etc.) and rows representing individual content items (like a specific property listing, travel destination, or recipe). Collections are incredibly versatile and can store all kinds of information, from product catalogs to customer testimonials.

Here’s how you can set up a collection in Wix:

  1. Access the CMS in your Wix dashboard.

  2. Create a New Collection: Define the purpose of your collection—are you creating it for property listings, travel packages, or recipes?

  3. Add Fields: Customize your collection by adding fields that match your content. For example, a “Property Listing” collection might have fields like “Property Name,” “Location,” “Price,” “Image,” and “Description.”

Once your collection is set up, you’ll find it much easier to add and manage content. Instead of updating each page manually, you simply add a new row to your collection, and it’s automatically reflected on your website via dynamic pages.

What Are Dynamic Pages in Wix?

A Dynamic Page in Wix is a special type of page that connects directly to a collection. It automatically pulls content from the collection and displays it according to a predefined template. This means you can create one dynamic page layout and have it display hundreds of entries from a collection without having to build each page individually.

Here’s a quick guide on setting up a dynamic page:

  1. Connect to a Collection: In the Page Manager, create a dynamic page and link it to your collection.

  2. Set Up the Design: Customize the design and layout of your page to suit your brand. The layout will be used for each entry, creating a cohesive look across all your dynamic pages.

  3. Preview: View each entry from your collection on its dedicated dynamic page. As you add new entries to the collection, Wix will automatically create new pages following the same layout.

Dynamic pages are perfect for repetitive content, like real estate listings or travel destinations, where each item needs its own page but shares a similar structure.

Industries That Benefit Most from Wix CMS

With its flexible structure, Wix CMS can cater to a wide range of industries. Let’s dive into some specific examples.

1. Real Estate Agents

For real estate agents, showcasing properties online is crucial, and Wix’s CMS offers an ideal solution. With a property listings collection, agents can store information for each property, including details like:

  • Property Name

  • Location

  • Price

  • Square Footage

  • Number of Bedrooms/Bathrooms

  • Image Gallery

Using a dynamic page, each listing will have its own page that pulls information directly from the collection. This setup not only saves time but also provides a professional and consistent layout for potential buyers. Agents can quickly add or update properties in the collection, and Wix CMS will automatically reflect those changes on the website.

2. Travel Agencies

Travel agencies rely on a steady flow of new packages and destinations to keep customers engaged. With Wix CMS, travel agencies can create a destinations collection that includes fields like:

  • Destination Name

  • Package Type

  • Price

  • Highlights

  • Image Gallery

The dynamic page can then use this information to display each destination, offering potential travelers an engaging, visual experience. As new packages are added or old ones are modified, the collection is easily updated, keeping the website fresh and relevant without extra work.

A perfect example is on Travel Allure's website. Travel Allure showcases their destinations using CMS in Wix each destination listed has It's own dynmic page, see here.

3. Culinary Arts Professionals (Chefs, Bakers, Food Bloggers)

Chefs, bakers, and food bloggers can use Wix CMS to manage a recipe collection that features various dishes. For each recipe, fields could include:

  • Recipe Name

  • Ingredients

  • Preparation Time

  • Cooking Instructions

  • Images

With a single dynamic page layout, each recipe can be displayed with the same formatting. This uniformity gives a polished feel to the website while allowing chefs and bloggers to easily add new recipes or tweak existing ones without updating each page manually.

4. Event Planners

Event planners often manage multiple events simultaneously, each with its unique details. A Wix collection can help keep track of each event’s information, such as:

  • Event Name

  • Date and Time

  • Location

  • Description

  • Tickets or Booking Link

Dynamic pages ensure that each event has its page, complete with details pulled from the collection. Event planners can easily add new events or update existing ones in the collection, and Wix will ensure the updates are reflected on their dynamic event pages.

5. Retail and E-commerce Stores

For small e-commerce businesses, managing product listings can be a hassle. With Wix CMS, a product collection can store details like:

  • Product Name

  • Price

  • Description

  • SKU

  • Image

Dynamic pages will pull each product’s details from the collection and display them in a uniform, attractive format. When products are added or removed from the collection, the changes are reflected site-wide, saving time and ensuring accuracy across the website.

Best Practices for Using Wix CMS

Now that we’ve covered how Wix CMS works and which industries benefit most, here are some best practices for making the most out of this tool:

  • Organize Your Collections: Use clear and descriptive field names, and keep your data organized for easy updating.

  • SEO Optimization: Be sure to fill out SEO fields within each collection entry. This can help improve your site’s search engine rankings.

  • Match Your Brand: Customize your dynamic pages to reflect your brand’s style and personality. This will provide a cohesive look across all your pages.

  • Test Regularly: After making updates to your collection, preview the changes to ensure they display correctly on the dynamic pages.

Take Control of Your Content with Wix CMS

Wix CMS collections and dynamic pages make it easier than ever for small business owners and new designers to manage content efficiently. By using these tools, you can save time, present a consistent brand image, and keep your website up-to-date with minimal effort.

Whether you’re a real estate agent listing properties, a travel agency showcasing destinations, or a chef sharing recipes, Wix’s CMS is built to streamline your workflow and elevate your online presence. So dive in, set up a collection, and explore the endless possibilities of dynamic pages in Wix—it’s a game-changer for building scalable, content-driven websites.
